Idiotic things…

Sunday, July 11th, 2004

ChemistryEver on the lookout for odd science/craft experiments, I was pleased to find instructions on how to make soap out of bacon, and poking around we see that this is part of a much larger list of idiotic things that you can do. I find the most tantalizing to be instructions on how to make Pruno, or prison wine made from fruit, sugar and ketchup. The author presents the resulting summary:

The only drawback pruno has, aside from its unappealing tannish-orange color, the white flecks of mold floating on the top and the smell you can’t wash off, is its taste. For lack of a better metaphor, pruno tastes like a bile flavored wine cooler. It tastes so bad, in fact, that it could very well be poisonous or psychedelic, which might explain the violence it induces in prisoners.

Wireless Ipod Hack

Sunday, July 11th, 2004

In case you are running out of geeky things to do with gadgets you could try wire a PocketPC to an Ipod to allow wireless file swapping to anyone within range of your wireless. Even if you poo-poo illegal file swapping, there are some things of interest here: namely, the use of Apple’s Rendezvous/Zeroconf/Howl stuff to discover and broadcast availability of web services from the Pocket PC. Since I don’t have a PocketPC, this hack is of limited use to me, but I think that in the future Apple’s Rendezvous technology will be more widely deployed, especially in setting up impromptu networks.

Internet Archive: Feature Films

The Brain That Wouldn't DieI guess I wasn’t paying attention: the Internet Archive has added a Feature Films section. The selection is fairly unremarkable for now, but contains a few films of interest: Night of the Living Dead, the classic Edmond O’Brien film D.O.A. , and the classic horror film The Brain that Wouldn’t Die. Enjoy!
