Via archive.org, you can download a Divx copy of George Meiles Le voyage dans la lune. This classic 1902 silent film may qualify as he earliest science fiction movie.  The image to the right is probably the most famous from the film. Cool stuff!

Back in 1982 or so, Georges Melies’ granddaughter came to visit Lucasfilm, bringing with her newly restored prints of several Melies films, including Voyage dans la Lune. The two distinguishing features of the things she showed were extreme staginess (most of Melies’ films were shot from a single camera angle, pointed at a proscenium) and the inventiveness of Melies’ special effects. He had to invent most of the tricks he used, having no predecessors to learn from.
