Math identities…

Hmmm. While searching for some unrelated program, I uncovered a program that I wrote which found the following identities:

13 + 123 = 93 + 103
23 + 893 = 413 + 863
83 + 533 = 293 + 503
93 + 343 = 163 + 333
93 + 583 = 223 + 573
103 + 273 = 193 + 243
173 + 763 = 383 + 733
303 + 673 = 513 + 583
513 + 823 = 643 + 753

Why is this interesting? It’s really not. I just kind of like math.

250mw can work!

Amazing. 173 reports today, running just 250mw. And not just really close contacts: I even got one spot two spots from VK6DI. Imagine what I could do with a real antenna!

Thanks for the loan of the oscilloscope, Tom

My friend Tom was kind enough to loan me his oscilloscope, a basic 20Mhz model, but adequate to what I needed it for: testing to see what was going on with my Softrock Lite II. Just for fun, I first tried hooking it up to the simple crystal oscillator/buffer amplifier that I built a few weeks back. I never really used an oscilloscope before (thanks again Tom for entrusting it to me), but a few minutes of swapping things around gave the following:

p1040349

A pretty nice looking sine wave! I’m not entirely impressed, since I am aware that the harmonics of this signal are probably beyond the range of the scope to measure, but it still looks pretty nice.

The next thing was to try to see if my Softrock was still working. The main oscillator runs at 28+ Mhz, but the divided flip flop is divided by a factor of four, so it should basically look the same. I’d expect it to look a little more like a square waves, but I’d be shocked if it was very close, since again, all the higher harmonics are likely to get attenuated. Here’s the pic:

p1040354

Pretty much as expected!

I’m too tired to do a good job on this yet, but I was afraid that the dividers weren’t working, and they both clearly are. When I get some time this weekend, I’ll work on trying to understand what’s going on with the rest of the radio.

Thanks again, Tom!

Dropping MEPT/WSPR power by 10db

While I won’t get quite as many spots with 10db less power, I think it’s more sporting. I’ve been seeing quite a bit of IMD on WA0UWH’s grabber, and stations VE7TIL have been receiving me with very large signal to noise ratios. I’ll let this go at the 250mw level for a day or two, and see how we do.

Addendum: Still getting into Seattle well. Check out the grab:

VK2ZAY, both here and abroad…

Not only am I currently recieving VK2ZAY’s signal rather well:

my-vk2zay

But he’s concurrently getting into ON5EX’s grabber in Belgium:on5ex-vk2zay

It’s about 7,400 miles from me to Alan’s beacon, but it’s over 10,000 miles to Belgium from VK-land. Very nice.

SolderSmoke Daily News: Homebrew WSPR from W3PM

Bill posted today about W3PM’s design for a dedicated WSPR beacon transciever. It’s very slick: basically a crystal oscillator that can be mixed with the signal from a PC sound card, then piped through a narrow crystal filter and through an amplifier chain into an antenna. Check out the PDF, it’s quite nice.

Cycle America

A friend of mine from the Chabot Space and Science Center, Don Saito, was recently laid off from his IT job in Berkeley, and decided to celebrate by embarking on a circumnavigation of these continental United States on a recumbent tricycle. He’s got a blog called Cycle America, and seems to be equipped with all the gadgets that will make following his trek fascinating. Good luck, Don! Stay safe!

QRSS over morning coffee…

This morning I see that Dan, NM5DV has worked out his issues with this Softrock, and is now putting out a nice signal up above WA5DJJ. Yesterday, his signal made it briefly into Belgium alongside WA5DJJ: I’m wondering if anyone has been using Softrocks as beacon transmitters.

Down below, you can perhaps see hints of VK2ZAY as well as VK6DI. VK6DI will be shutting down operations from Western Australia soon and moving back to Eastern Australia. Too bad: I’ve really enjoyed these DX opportunities.

I’ve had the beacon off for a few days, but I think it’s time go get it back on. 10 minute repeat time.

Addendum: I was on IRC, and got a quick note from NM5DV indicating that he thought I had gone off frequency. Yep, I had bumped the knob on my radio while I was resetting the beacon (now operating near the top of the subband, around 10.140090). You can see that the 20hz shift was quite clear. 🙂

The Internet can be an odd place…

This is just a strange little story. I’ve wanted to add some time markers to the spectrum display on my grabber at http://qrss.info, but really didn’t want to link in any kind of fancy graphics code. Really, if I had the data for a simple 8×8 pixel bitmap font, I could plot the characters myself (after all, that’s pretty much how we had to do it back in the old days). So, I typed “8×8 bitmap font” in the Google search bar, found that a gentlemen named John Hall had made just such a thing, and said that it was free for any use. Very good, say I. I downloaded the PNG file that had all the characters, massaged it in a couple of ways, and three minutes later, I had a font definition file that I could use in my revamped version of my beacon app.

Later, I thought that it would be nice if I acknowledged the largess of my font-benefactor, only to find something odd: John “Overcode” Hall had passed away back in 2005 after a battle with melanoma. Here’s one of the announcements. Oddly enough, the website that I got the font file from earlier seems to be down. Very strange.

In any case, thanks John. I hope that after my time has come and gone, maybe some of this will live on, and inspire others. Or, at least help them hack together a program.

Addendum: Here’s the link that Google sent me to.

Sigh… Softrock not working…

I think I’ll need to borrow an oscilloscope and see what’s going on. Frankly, I think I just made too many mistakes during assembly. Since I know at least four I made and corrected, I suspect another four luck under the cover. The primary oscillator seems to be running, but I am no longer certain the divider is running (it did when I previously tested it, but who knows…)

I’ll work on it some more again soon.

Morning QRSS discoveries…

After more or less a full day where I made almost ever mistake possible (exaggerating) on gettin my Softrock Lite built (which it is, except for connectors, it’s ready for final testing), I put the grabber back up in receive mode. I didn’t bother to get the WSPR beacon back up for now, but that will return shortly. Scanning through backlog didn’t reveal too much of interest, except for a very brief 15 minute period where VE1VDM and W1BW were booming in. Here’s an exemplar:

scr00082

I also noted that my frequency stability is vastly improved without the thermal cycling of transmit going on. Lines appear flat, nobody is wandering up and down, proving rather conclusively that it was me.
