Attempt at Lightning Photography

May 26, 2009 | General | By: Mark VandeWettering

Some people have been using the CHDK firmware to do motion detection and capture pictures of lightning strikes. Despite the fact that lightning has been hitting Tampa all week, I didn’t get around to trying this until last night. I wasn’t entirely successful, but I did capture these two exposures:

This lightning strike hit almost directly overhead, and was really bright and loud.

Hey Mark,

Where did you buy your SD1100? I want to find a place locally to verify firmware comparable with CDHK before buying

Thanks

I bought mine at a local Target store. I forget exactly which version of the firmware mine had, but I followed the directions on the CHDK wiki and it worked just fine.

I did look at Target, seems like they only have the SD1200 on the web but I may walk in this weekend and see if the store has different items. Thanks
