Complete ukulele kit for $22

December 11, 2004 | Music | By: Mark VandeWettering

For some of my do-it-yourself musicians, Boing Boing ran a link to this $22 kit to build a ukulele. I’m developing an intellectual if not aesthetic appreciation for inexpensive musical instruments. Can anyone recommend outstanding examples of music for the ukulele?

Addendum: I found something brilliant.

You want The Duke Of Uke, a fellow Portlander that apparently shares my ISP. You may whet your whistle with his cover of Nirvana’s Smells Like Teen Spirit 🙂

On Dec 7 I heard German (Hannover) bassist Jürgen Morgenstern play experimental, improvised ukulele. He and Oakland bassist Damon Smith have recorded an album called Mit Ohne Kontrabass, with Morgenstern on Ukulele and Smith on Cello. Another Oakland experimentalist, Jonathan Segel (he’s the violinist in Camper Van Beethoven) also plays experimental music on Ukulele. And I have one around here somewhere that I’m pretty sure I can play wrong, too. (Also, there’s a passel of Pixarians that play more traditional Ukulele music, including Pete Doctor and Andy Witkin.)
