Day 49, A Chisel Box with Stanley Fatmax Chisels

Published on 2025-06-10 by Mark VandeWettering

A couple of days ago, I featured a little box I made featuring a sliding lid. Today's garage gem is the evolution of my skill in making better boxes, this time targeting a collection of Stanley "Fatmax" chisels that I got at a garage sale. They aren't the most amazing or collectable chisels (I keep a better set with my mallet on the wall) but I thought it would be good to have a spare set I could use to practice sharpening and for general banging about.

The box itself has a similar design to the previous one, but made a bit more precisely.

It has a similar sliding lid.

Set of Stanley Fatmax Chisels

There is a set of three Fatmax Chisels. These are pretty beefy, and obviously meant to be used roughly on a jobsite. I've got them in 1/2", 3/4" and 1 1/4" wide sizes.

Foam inserts were cut with hotwire cutter

To keep them from banging together, I cut some inserts out of some pink insulation foam that I had lying around. To cut them, I used my homebrew hot wire cutter that I tinkered together. I cut the outlines more or less freehand, which is why they aren't particularly nice looking, but they do an excellent job of holding the chisels in place.

The box is made from some decent grade plywood with a finish of polycrylic. I probably should have labeled the box like I did the others, but I never got around to it.

Hope your Tuesday is going well.
