Day 57, Two Sawhorses and a Benchtop (IP)

Okay, back from my vacation, and into the shop. Back in 2019 I started on a project at a woodworking class at my local high school. My idea was to build a workbench using some Douglas Fir 2x4s that I got at Home Depot. This was in fact the place where I put together the DIY stool that I mentioned in this previous installment of My Garage Gems.

I made several mistakes while creating the workbench, but I suspect that with a little work (and the jointer and planer that I have acquired since then none of them will prove to be fatal.

At a later point, I decided that I didn't have an assembly table that was suitably large and stable enough to do the final glue up, so I went ahead and created this pair of sawhorses. They have spent some time outside in the rain, but still appear to be in good shape and quite sturdy. Once I am ready to do the final glue up, I could probably use some shims and winding sticks to get them flat and level, and then turn the three sections (which are merely heavy) into a solid top which is truly massive.

I'm not sure where I got the designs of these particular ones, and I'm not sure if I would do them exactly the same way again, but they are probably sturdy enought to hold at least a thousand pounds, and the fact that they are stackable makes them pretty useful.

Have a good Tuesday...
