Downgrading my Axim X50v

Well, I spent $40 for the Windows Mobile 5 upgrade for my Dell, and it’s been a pain in the ass ever since.  Apparently I’m not alone, since now Dell officially lists a downgrade for the Axim: yep, it’s back to 2003 SE for the little guy.  Maybe it will stop blinking its stupid LED, draining its battery, and just being a pain in the butt.

Busy Day

Well, today I was off at the O’Reilly Emerging Telephony Conference at the SF Marriot.  I’m mostly an interested bystander of the VOIP universe, but have done some experiments and are likely to be doing more in the near future, and I thought it was a good place to collect a book on Asterisk and generally learn a bit more about VOIP technology and cellular phones.   I was also trying to put my brain in the entrepaneur/venture capital space, and understand what that’s all about.  I’m not sure I succeeded, but I was having a pretty good time, when all of a sudden people started coming up to me and congratulating me.   Yep, Pixar bought Disney.  Or something like that.   This move had been rumored for quite some time, so it wasn’t unexpected, but it was kind of annoying that it came on a day I had taken off to go do something else.   I decided to bug out a bit early and sample the buzz back and work, and get the scoop, but I got back at around 6:00, so lots of people had left.  But my card key still works, so I guess they are going to keep me, and my Pixar stock is 2.3 shares of Disney stock.

I’m burned out for now, so if you want to find out about some of the goings on at eTel, try  Dan’s blog for now, and I’ll try to get up some of my own impressions later, or maybe tomorrow.

A Tulip

Tulip

Well, the tulip bulbs that I planted last October are finally blooming, and I grabbed my little Nikon 4500 and shot this photo just to have something colorful in my background. I really need to get a new camera. 🙂

Warning! Do not proceed if you are a complete idiot!

This is a few years old, but still…

Because I had completely sealed the PC case the only opening near top was the DVD drive. So I opened that and put the small hose I had purchased specially for the job into the DVD drive as far as it would go. With what I can only describe as great excitement and anticipation, I turned on the water.

Addendum: From one of the comments in the digg thread it appears that this was a hoax.  Too bad.

Creating a Mobile Hotspot With a Wireless Router and a Cellphone

I’ve seen a lot of projects like this, but this one has some nice twists: they modify a cheap router that runs the OpenWRT firmware to open up one of the internal serial ports to connect it to the cell phone via a cheap data cable, and then add a bunch scripts to make ppp work through the cell phone, and then share the connection via wireless. Very neat, and points out that T-Mobile has some cheap unlimited data plans.

Probably could do the same thing with the WRT54GS routers like I have too.

Full length Vampire movie, 9200 dollars

I’m fascinated with low budget film making, so I was interested in this Wired article I found on Digg. Director Roger Ingraham is a mere 19 years old, dropped out of school, wrote a script, and shot the film Moonshine using volunteers on a total budget of $9200. This week (starting today, if I’m not mistaken) it will be shown at the Sundance Film Festival.

That’s just too cool. The trailer appears excellent. I’ll have to try to catch this soon.

No comment from Dembski on E. O. Wilson…

I know, I know, I’m on an Intelligent Design kick.  I’ll move on sometime soon, but I couldn’t help noticing that luminary of the Intelligent Design community, William Dembski apparently could find no point to criticize in E. O. Wilson’s editorial for USA today.  His only addition is the title of his own article, which seems to imply that Wilson claimed that “strict Darwinism” (whatever that means) is a fact, and a law of nature, when of course, Wilson didn’t do anything of the sort.

Uncommon Descent » E. O. Wilson: Strict Darwinism is “an undeniable fact” and “ranks as a virtual law of nature”

Addendum: Dembski and Behe are widely listed as the intellectual leaders of Intelligent Design, and these are the kinds of arguments they forward.
